The inaugural outing of Japan's Wajima GP turned out to be a largely disappointing race for the CB's team. With Derwin Vanetten placing highest on the day in 12th place and the rest of the team dispersed throughout the top 46; bar Alfons Van Gastel. The inexperience and lack of competitive action this season saw Van Gastel come a cropper on a simple bend which he overshot, ending up in a crumpled heap in a roadside ditch.
Team manager Blazon, laughed today off "well lady luck wasn't with us today, maybe next time...this is competitive cycling, no?". Blazon also described the incident with Alfons as "an unexpected escape from the peloton", [cueing much laughter in the press pit] "come on fellas, he's our youngest rider in the team, sometimes you lose concentration when the whole race is about focus. He'll be back on the bike next week and no doubt better for this lesson".
Even Alfons saw the funny side of his managers comments "yeah, it's never nice to pull a bomb scare exit, but it's really just some minor cuts and bruises. The stick I'll take from the rest of the boys will probably last longer than my injuries".
So, as the team looks ahead to their first trip to Iraq for the Mosul GP, there is no uncertainty with the riders that Blazon is looking for Shock & Awe tactics to end the season on high...At the front end of the peloton and amongst the placings this time of course!
